Cruelty in Perfection & The Reward of Cruelty
WILLIAM HOGARTH 1697-1764

[1 January 1751]
WOODCUTS by JOHN BELL (fl.1750s)
Second states, Cruelty in perfection with the letter printed from an inserted block (cf. letterpress), & both with small losses to the border lines. Paulson’s states are incorrect.
On Auvergne laid paper, printed c.1790, or earlier
Paulson describes these two woodcuts (under p.189 & p.190) as ‘copies’.  In fact the pair, the only woodcuts designed by Hogarth, pre date the engraved set by a month. Only these two designs, from the eventual set of four, were made as woodcuts and the project was abandoned in favour of the smaller engravings. Only proofs from the 1750s seem to have survived and the blocks were never used commercially. The blocks survived, until a few impressions were printed by Boydell c.1790-1810.
some old minor restoration to margins, a repaired tear into the image of  Cruelty in Perfection

Another pair, well printed on wove paper, probably by Bulmer for Boydell c.1810
Trimmed just outside the work, lightly mounted on old album sheets
